Introducing The Toledano & Chan b/1 Dazzle & Double Dazzle

The creative pair’s latest architectural talking-point timepiece is inspired by the legendary dazzle camouflage of WWI warships.

What We Know

Hot on the heels of the recently revealed Oshinobi - an unconventional secret watch - Toledano & Chan has just dropped two new variants of the b/1: the Dazzle and the diamond-dialled Double Dazzle. Just like the Oshinobi, these b/1 Dazzles are all about concealment, but with a naval twist.

The b/1 Dazzle’s grade 5 titanium case, dial and bracelet feature alternating frosted and satin-brushed finishes in irregularly applied planes, inspired by the art of dazzle camouflage. During the First World War, the Royal Navy discovered that applying bold, contrasting geometric lines to the hulls and superstructures of its ships worked to break up their silhouettes. Essentially, rather than hiding the ships, these painted lines made it very tricky for spying U-boats to calculate a ship’s speed, heading or size, thus helping protect them from torpedoes and coordinated attacks from the air.

Beyond dazzle camo ships being fondly remembered by historians and graphic designers alike, this type of disguise remains alive and well in the automotive industry. Manufacturers are regularly known to wrap test cars with a dazzle-like finish in an effort to hide the finer details of their design from eagle-eyed reporters.

To bring dazzle camo to the wrist, Toledano & Chan has CNC-engraved the b/1’s entire case, integrated bracelet and dial before the contrasting finishes are applied. The frosting is achieved through an applied diamond-dust layer, while the contrasted sections are brushed. The finishes maintain a difference in height too, with the brushed sections slightly raised above the frosted surfaces, further emphasising the three-dimensional visual effect.

The b/1 Double Dazzle goes even further, indulging Toledano’s penchant for a dusting of diamonds with around 350 natural diamonds pavé-set into the sections of the dial that are otherwise frosted in the regular version of the watch. The arrival of the Double Dazzle marks the second diamond-set watch from the independent brand in just two weeks.

Inside both Dazzle variants is the standard movement found in all b/1 models, the Sellita SW100, which delivers an automatically wound 42-hour power reserve, while ticking away at 4 Hz. The movement isn’t on display, instead sitting behind a titanium screwed-in caseback.

The b/1 Dazzle and Double Dazzle will be available directly from the Toledano & Chan website on October 24. Production is limited to 200 total pieces, split out at 188 Dazzles and just a dozen Double Dazzles destined for daring wrists. As far as pricing, the Dazzle is US$7,700 (~A$11,000), while the Double Dazzle is US$9,700 (~A$13,900).

What We Think

While the Dazzles are the latest in an increasingly long line of b/1 variants, they share a common conceptual thread with the Toledano & Chan Oshinobi unveiled last week.

“I’ve been obsessed with dazzle camouflage for years,” Phil Toledano shared with me when I spoke with him about these latest additions to the b/1 family. “Dazzle camouflage was designed to disrupt, deceive, and a watch is the opposite of that. The Toledano & Chan Dazzle and the Oshinobi are two sides of the same coin. Dazzle is an aesthetic use of camouflage, and the Oshinobi is a functional use of camouflage."

Aesthetically speaking, I think the Dazzle looks arresting, and even if you’re not familiar with dazzle camouflage, its design is so abstract that it holds aesthetic merit even without historical context. For those who are familiar, it adds another layer to the watch’s appeal, and I can’t think of another watch that would better suit the concept of dazzle camouflage than the b/1. The dazzle pattern hasn’t altered the pronounced lines of the b/1 case, but just like the camouflage is intended to do, it does work to obfuscate them.

The Double Dazzle, on the other hand, is outrageous in all the right ways. Applying pavé diamonds to the dial of such a graphically simple, yet radically aggressive form is a little cheeky, and sparkly diamonds do plenty to contradict the concept of concealment – which, considering Toledano’s well-known sense of humour, is almost certainly the game he’s playing.

The Dazzle will almost certainly have a broader appeal than the Double Dazzle, which Toledano & Chan clearly know, given the respective production numbers of each watch. In either guise, if you find yourself constantly hunted on the high seas by U-boats aiming for your wrist, the perfect watch has arrived.
