Introducing The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Tech & Its Intriguing 3-Hour Bezel

Celebrating World Ocean Day in the best way possible, Blancpain have released a new, highly technical dive watch. Highlighting their ongoing support of ocean preservation through the Blancpain Ocean Commitment, the brand new Fifty Fathoms Tech has been especially developed with deep diving, underwater explorers, photographers and scientists in mind.

This new, mainline Fifty Fathoms Tech builds on the existing platform and function of the Fifty Fathoms Tech Gombessa, first introduced in 2023. It pioneered the three-hour bezel and dedicated three-hour dive hand, an industry first, with its calibre 13P8. The new Fifty Fathoms Tech advances its previous incarnation with the addition of a date at 4:30, a brand-new tool-free interchangeable strap system, and a fresh dial.

Its case measures in at 14.81mm thick with a diameter of 47mm, designed especially with technical diving in mind and constructed out of grade 23 titanium - an alloy Blancpain has used for years that offers more corrosion resistance over the industry standard grade 5. That case also features a helium escape valve at 10 o’clock and the signature ‘Blancpain’ engraving down the case-band below it.

The three-hour count-up bezel insert is surrounded by a special knurling for extra grip, whilst inside it houses Blancpain's calibre 13P5A, a 4Hz automatic movement with a power reserve of 120 hours, on show through a sapphire crystal caseback.

Operating like a standard three-hand dive watch, the additional dedicated dive hand completes a full rotation around the dial every three hours - once a diver zeroes the bezel to the dedicated dive hand, they’ll be able to read off the special three-hour graduated bezel to time their dive. It’s worth noting that you aren’t able to change the dedicated dive hand independently of the timekeeping, though I’m not able to think of any additional function that being able to do this would afford you.

That new dial switches the fauxtina hands and markers from the Gombessa out for the Fifty Fathoms’ signature pale-green lume with large lumed numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12. It’s finished in what Blancpain calls 'Absolute Black', a pigment that absorbs up to 97% of ambient light, providing as much contrast and anti-reflection as possible. Interestingly, the bezel, dedicated three-hour dive hand and seconds hand are coated in blue Super-LumiNova, intentionally distinct from the green Super-LumiNova for the dial, hour and minute hand, so there’s a clear visual difference in diving time and timekeeping whilst at the depths.

Whilst not a limited edition, in traditional Blancpain fashion, each piece is individually numbered and engraved on the caseback and comes packaged in Blancpain’s really cool Peli case. It's priced at A$37,300.

There’s no getting away from the fact that at 14.81mm thick and 47mm wide, the Fifty Fathoms Tech is a big watch - indeed, it’s the biggest Fifty Fathoms in the current lineup (excluding the gigantic 55.6mm X Fathoms), so it’s going to need a substantial wrist to pull it off. However, we’re talking about a purpose-built diving tool made to spend most of its time on the outside of a submerged wetsuit cuff. In that environment, legibility is vital, and slipping under a dress shirt is of lesser priority.

In addition to its size, the central lug with an integrated rubber strap around it removes the extra bulk of traditional lugs and lends the case a circular circumference, meaning the lug-to-lug is the same as the diameter. There’s also some articulation to the strap, which when all combined with a lightweight titanium case it will make the Fifty Fathoms Tech wear truer to around 43 or 44mm when on the wrist.

The three-hour dive hand is a really novel complication. Obviously, it's developed for technical mixed gas, saturation and rebreather diving where dive times can get up to and beyond three hours, but I can also see it coming in handy for other uses as well. Speaking from experience, I often use a 60-minute dive bezel to time day-to-day things, and regularly find myself needing to count the hours manually once the initial 60 minutes elapse.

I really like the clean dial design and chunky numerals that are just the right scale for a fit-for-purpose diver like this. Blancpain is continuing to nail its typefaces (something I think many brands overlook), mixing its traditional serifed logo with the Fifty Fathoms cursive, and a modernist sans-serif font for the ‘Tech’ text in orange. Despite the mix, it feels really cohesive, and that same typeface used for ‘Tech’ is seen on the date wheel, which helps to integrate it smoothly.

It’s also great to see Blancpain offering a toolless strap system, which is always a welcome development - especially for enthusiasts. To mark this, Blancpain are also offering black and white straps (all featuring that perforated design) available in addition, sold separately to the orange fitted as standard.
