What We Know
You would be forgiven for assuming that Grand Seiko, being the relatively conservative luxury watch brand of a sprawling Japanese mega-corporation, wouldn't be a standout example of a watchmaker that actively engages with the watch community at a grassroots level... But you'd be wrong in that assumption. Grand Seiko has always demonstrated an unusual willingness to listen to and foster its collector community - one of many ways GS challenges expectations.
Key to this is the GS9 Club, Grand Seiko's official membership organisation for owners of its watches. Anyone who owns a GS is eligible to join their local chapter; it was originally a Japan-exclusive club, but now there are GS9 chapters across the globe, with Australia's GS9 Club having launched in 2023. GS9 Club members get access to events and exclusive content through its 'Chronicle 9' newsletter, but perhaps most excitingly, Grand Seiko has produced several limited editions over the years that have been exclusively available to GS9 Club members.
Up until now, all of these GS9 Club limited editions have also been regional limited editions, such as the SBGE263 'Eagle' that was offered in the United States in 2020 when the US GS9 Club launched. However, the latest GS9 Club limited edition, the SBGY045, differs from previous LEs in that it's globally available - you still need to be a GS9 Club member, but it doesn't matter which chapter you're a part of. It's also atypical in that it sports an unusually restrained, untextured dial - making it the epitome of a connoisseur's Grand Seiko, which is highly fitting.
Specifically, it's in a greyish-blue-green shade called 'Minatonezu', which comes from the Edo-period 'Shijūhatcha Hyakunezumi' colour palette. This palette of browns and greys was borne out of the strict sumptuary laws from the ruling Tokugawa shogunate, which outlawed commoners from wearing bright, flashy, or luxurious clothes or colours. However, commoners subtly rebelled by pushing the boundaries of what was considered grey or brown, experimenting with diverse shades and textures. Speaking of commoners, GS9 Club members actually voted on what the SBGY045's design was going to be, so there's a nice parallel there.
For the SBGY045's dial, a matte base in Minatonezu is then covered with a thick, mirror-clear coating, which resembles a rich enamel. This is then topped by baton markers, except for nine o'clock, which instead stands out with an Arabic numeral '9' as a discreet reference to the GS9 Club, a detail that previously appeared on the Japan-exclusive SBGW319.
Shinichiro Kubo, Grand Seiko’s product designer, explains that the SBGY045 was created to express “a distinctively Japanese smartness for those in the know,” with a texture that shares something in common with zen and wabi-sabi, while Kohei Egashira, who is responsible for product planning at Grand Seiko, describes the model as “a new aesthetic design never before seen from Grand Seiko”.
Part of the Elegance collection, the SBGY045 is functionally identical to the popular SBGY007 'Omiwatari'. It's a 38.5mm stainless steel dress watch utilising the manually-wound 9R31 Spring Drive movement, which offers a 72-hour power reserve and +/-15 seconds per month accuracy. It comes mounted on a calf-leather strap.
The Grand Seiko SBGY045 GS9 Club Exclusive is a limited edition of 600 pieces globally and is available exclusively to GS9 Club members (that is, people who already own a Grand Seiko) via pre-order application. It retails for A$12,950, with deliveries slated for February 2027. Additionally, viewings will be available at Grand Seiko's Melbourne Boutique from 24 August to 27 August 2026, and at the Grand Seiko Sydney Boutique from 31 August 2026 to 4 September 2026.
What We Think
As mentioned in my opening spiel, it always surprises me how close Grand Seiko is to its community. Whether it's CEO Akio Naito responding directly to customer feedback on LinkedIn or creating GS9 Club limited editions like this, a lot of brands could learn from the Japanese giant.
The SBGY045 in particular feels like the ultimate insider's GS, and for that reason, I'm a fan. There's nothing wrong with a textured dial, but it's great to see GS try something different... Yet the brand also hasn't lost its flair for slightly esoteric Japanese inspiration. It might seem obscure, but for those who know a bit about Japanese history, a dial that pays homage to the Shijūhatcha Hyakunezumi - perhaps the original "if you know, you know" form of wealth signalling - is beyond perfect for a GS9 Club LE. Which, of course, was entirely the point.
In person, it's almost austere - the kind of watch that demands a second glance - but it's significantly more dynamic than the very flat renders GS shared with GS9 Club members when its design was being voted on! A closer look reveals the rich, lacquer-y depth of its dial, which offers beautiful light play. The Omiwatari is already a great dressy watch, but the SBGY045, with its versatile and understated Minatonezu dial, fits that every elegance brief even better. I'm glad I'm a GS9 Club member...
