Introducing Hamilton & Christopher Nolan Team Up Once Again On An Epic 'The Odyssey' Limited Edition

If the Ancient Greeks worked out how to make watches, they'd probably wear something like this.

What We Know

How do you make a movie tie-in watch for a film set in the Bronze Age? A sundial for the wrist? Hamilton, the American-Swiss watchmaker, and legendary film director Christopher Nolan are no strangers, having previously collaborated on watches for the latter's films Interstellar (2014), Tenet (2020) and Oppenheimer (2023). However, their latest team-up -- for Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of the most famous Greek epic, The Odyssey -- isn’t a watch that’s worn on screen, for obvious reasons. Rather, it’s a timepiece more poetically inspired by the Homerian epic and designed in collaboration with Nolan “as a tribute to the story itself”.

While the watch is technically based on the Khaki Field Mechanical, it’s not some sort of retro-futuristic field watch. Rather, the KFM base was chosen for its bronze case, bronze being the metal used for armour and weaponry in The Odyssey’s setting of Ancient Greece. Weaponry is particularly relevant here, as this watch’s most unique feature is a sword handset literally shaped like Odysseus’ swords from the myth.

Other touches that evoke the myth’s eponymous hero include a black brushed dial with a bronze pattern drawn from the texture of Odysseus’ helmet, a 12 o’clock index that references a rivet found on the scabbard of his sword, and a titanium caseback depicting Odysseus’ helmet alongside Christopher Nolan’s signature.

Most uniquely, the Khaki Field Auto The Odyssey Limited Edition comes with a replica of the goddess Athena’s pin, gifted to Odysseus (played by Matt Damon) by his wife Penelope (played by Anne Hathaway) and worn by him in this filmic adaptation as a talisman – so there is something you can wear that appears in the film!

The watch is limited to 2,112 pieces, a number which Hamilton explains it chose as 12 is a number with deep meaning in Greek mythology and one that appears multiple times in Homer’s Odyssey: the poem has 12,000 lines; 12 ships were sent to Troy, and Odysseus has to shoot an arrow through 12 axe heads to prove his identity. Price: A$2,200.

What We Think

I have mixed feelings about this piece. On the one hand, I think it’s slightly silly, having a movie tie-in watch for a film set thousands of years before the development of mechanical timekeeping (not that The Odyssey is what you’d call a realistic and grounded story anyway, considering it’s an epic myth with monsters and gods). It would be sillier if the watch actually appeared in the movie, though…

That said, I think the watch has been tastefully executed, and it’s a more eminently wearable piece than some of Hamilton’s other movie tie-in watches (the Ventura Edge and XXL Bright Dune: Part Two collabs immediately come to mind). The pin/brooch that comes with the watch is also a classy touch.
