Introducing The IWC Ingenieur 50th Anniversary Limited Editions (Live Pics)

This year marks fifty years since the introduction of the Gerald Genta-designed IWC Ingenieur, and IWC is marking the occasion with a pair of limited-edition Ingenieurs with a vintage-inspired silver dial.

The limited release spans the IWC Ingenieur 35 and 40 in steel, with the new dial inspired by a very rare variant of the original Ingenieur SL ref. 1832 from 1976. It features a brushed silver-plated dial with a simplified, less fussy IWC and Ingenieur signature that has been applied, rather than raised above the dial pattern like the standard Ingenieur. Looking closer at the Ingenieur signature, you’ll notice another vintage nod in the number 50, appearing where the letters ‘SL’ were placed on the original Ingenieur SL. It’s a clever reinterpretation of that original brandmark that nods to its origins for the half-century celebration.

Beyond the dial, it’s the standard IWC Ingenieur 40 and 35 in steel, which is to say it’s one of the best recent releases of an integrated bracelet revival watch, and one that’s both elegantly proportioned and somewhat under-the-radar pick relative to its Genta-designed compatriots.

Like the standard editions, these Ingenieurs measure 10.8mm and 9.4mm thick for the 40 and 35, respectively, with a few important differences between the two watches beyond their size. The 40 is slightly more true to the purpose of the original Ingenieur, featuring a soft-iron inner case for improved resistance to magnetism, a closed caseback, and a screw-down crown. The 35, on the other hand, doesn’t have anti-magnetic protection from an inner case, thanks to a sapphire caseback, while also featuring a non-screw-down crown that still maintains 100 metres of water resistance.

They also use different movements, with the 40 powered by an entirely in-house IWC calibre, whilst the 35’s movement debuted in the standard Ingenieur 35 early last year and is based on an ebauche made by ValFleurier (Richemont’s movement maker). In daily use, the primary difference between the movements is the power reserve, with 120 hours for the 40 and 42 hours in the 35.

Both of the Ingenieur 50th Anniversary editions are limited to 1,150 pieces each and are available now. The 40 is priced at A$22,300, while the 35 has an RRP of A$19,300.

IWC have been on a dream run since the relaunch of the Ingenieur 40 in 2023, following the relaunch with new dial variants, complications, materials (including ceramic), and sizes, with the mid-sized Ingenieur 35 launched in March 2025. Coming off this strong run, the 50th Anniversary is a well-deserved victory lap for the model, and one that looks back to the Ingenieur’s genesis in a format that will please both die-hard enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

The new anniversary Ingenieur brandmark is a cleverly simple variant that nods to the original, but doesn’t make the anniversary an overwhelming aspect of the design. At a glance, it’s not screaming “50th anniversary” at you, which certainly isn’t the case for all anniversary special editions. What strikes me most about the brushed silver dial is how the simpler finish allows the case shape to become a more visible aspect of the watch design. The standard models are beautifully finished, but their busy, structured dials can visually distract from the finishing of the case and bracelet. There’s a lot to like in the Ingenieur’s case, and this gorgeous dial allows the eye to appreciate it better.

I also love that IWC have resisted the temptation of using the 40’s blank steel caseback and 35’s blank sapphire caseback as a canvas for a 50th anniversary celebratory engraving. Personally, I think it would have been overkill and robbed owners of real estate for a custom engraving (at least on the steel back of the 40). It’s further proof that with this anniversary edition, IWC is quietly celebrating the milestone without going overboard, and that’s always the coolest way to celebrate a birthday. Beyond the “glance and you’ll miss it” 50 on the dial, the only other evidence that this is a special edition is the "Limited Edition" and "One of 1,150" text on the caseback ring.

It feels like IWC is aiming the 50th Anniversary edition squarely at the enthusiast crowd: those familiar with the back catalogue of Ingenieur models, who don’t want the watch to shout from the rooftops about its half-centenarian status. In saying that, some prospective enthusiasts are likely to wish IWC had made some small tweaks beyond the dial variation, which could have differentiated this edition a little more from the standard version, while also bringing it closer to the vintage reference that inspired it. (Editor's Note: its lack of genuine antimagnetic resistance is a particular aberration.)

As with the standard configuration, this Ingenieur 40’s bracelet is entirely satin-brushed across both the links and centre links, a trait carried forward from the original 1976 references. The current Ingenieur 35, however, stands out with polished centre links. Given that the anniversary edition is a throwback to the original reference, I would have loved to have seen the 35’s bracelet get the full-brushed treatment of the original 1976 reference.

I do really like the bold IWC signature at twelve that’s seen across the Ingenieur range, though if we’re talking vintage dial inspiration, a revival of the full International Watch Co. in that delicious cursive script from the vintage model could have been the icing on the cake because, at the end of the day, it’s these subtle differences that enthusiast buyers are looking for. With all of this said, I do think the 50th Anniversary Ingenieurs are great watches. I’m very excited to see the brushed dial in person, to admire how the natural light plays across it and the case.
