What We Know
This week, Richard Mille announced the RM HJ-02 In-House Automatic Tourbillon collection, a range of twelve piece uniques themed around four “chromatic universes”: pink, violet, blue, and green. The collection also marks more than 20 years of creating watches for women, with the RM 007 Automatic debuting four years after founding, in 2005 (the same year as the legendary RM 009 Tourbillon Felipe Massa).
The line-up arrives with cases in the brand's classic tonneau shape, measuring 30.7mm in length, 23.7mm wide, and 6.2mm thick, all of which are made from a combination of both white gold and titanium that’s either been finished with polishing or sandblasting. Apart from the caseback, there isn’t actually much white gold to be seen, with almost every square millimetre of the case, bridges, rotor, and even the buckle set with no less than 1,399 precious and ornamental stones that require a fairly mind-blowing 700 hours to be finished.
As far as how the stones are set, there’s plenty of Art Deco inspiration clearly visible across almost all of the surfaces of the case, with the tonneau shape’s curves broken down into geometric segments of inlaid hardstone and variously set gems. The design of the case was more than a year in development to achieve the desired effect, bringing the total development time for the collection to three years.
While the stone setting is clearly impressive, what’s also interesting about the RM HJ-02 collection is the addition of the new in-house automatic tourbillon calibre CRMT2 that was developed alongside the case to ensure a clean integration between the technical and jewellery elements of the watch. The movement has a free-sprung balance with variable inertia to improve reliability against shocks, while it promises a power reserve of around 50 hours when fully wound.
Each of the four versions arrives paired with a matching coloured leather strap and is secured with a folding clasp topped by a buckle that’s as ornately decorated as the rest of the watch.
What We Think
No matter what timepiece first comes to mind when you think of Richard Mille, there’s a through-line that could be summed up as being fairly uncompromising. Regardless of whether the watch’s specific focus is being ultra-thin, lightweight, shock-resistant, or any other area Richard Mille is known for, there’s a sense that no corner has been cut and no detail left unconsidered, and for Richard Mille’s second high jewellery collection of watches, that’s evident at first glance.
Every watch in the collection arrives with an explosion of colour that’s complemented by the kind of technical sophistication we’ve come to expect from Richard Mille, offering dials that are, on one hand, set with scores of gemstones and hardstones, while also being heavily skeletonised and grounded by the tourbillon spinning at 6 o’clock.
Maximalist in a way that very few watchmakers could execute as well as Richard Mille, the RM HJ-02 In-House Automatic Tourbillon collection proves what the brand is capable of beyond its technical achievements, and when neither money nor time is a constraint.
If you want to see more, Richard Mille has also shot a gloriously overproduced video titled The Dazzling Division to go along with the launch, starring brand ambassador Michelle Yeoh with music from Justice. Check it out below.
