Introducing Vacheron Constantin’s Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar Will Now Keep Time For A Staggering 70 Days

Incremental mechanical improvements to one of the coolest mechanical solutions on the market.

What We Know

If there’s a brand that hasn’t been shy about their penchant for complications as of late, it’s Vacheron Constantin, but they’re not just notable when it comes to how many can be crammed into a single watch. Quite the contrary: VC has a long history of special complications, and the Twin Beat is even more special still, as its set of specifications adds actual utility.

The concept was first presented in 2019, utilising a set of coaxial hairsprings in a single barrel assembly powering two separate gear trains, each being regulated at a different frequency. The wearer has a choice of “active” and “standby” modes, beating at 5Hz and 1.2Hz, respectively, without affecting timekeeping accuracy or interrupting the time display when switching modes.

With a four-fold reduction in beat rate (from 36,000 vibrations per hour to just 8,640), Vacheron Constantin is able to increase the power reserve from “just” four days to an incredible 70, which is the main drawcard on the new Twin Beat’s spec sheet. Though the reserve has jumped up by just five days, this is a commendable improvement considering the watch hasn’t lost any of its function, especially as it has retained its instantly-switching perpetual calendar indications.

This power-sapping event also has an effect on balance wheel amplitude, which Vacheron Constantin’s R&D team has tackled by further refining the mechanism; the Twin Beat uses a (now improved) double-gear with a semi-toothless wheel sandwiched in between, which snaps forwards with the help of a spiral spring, requiring a quarter of the energy a traditional snail cam set-up would.

Other mechanical improvements focused on the Twin Beat’s triple differentials, which are responsible for driving the hours and minutes via the first train wheels; delivering power to the correct gear train (one meshes with the top of the barrel and the other with the bottom); and displaying the power reserve. (For some more information on how these systems work, the venerable Jack Forster dove into the first Twin Beat back in January of 2019.)

Quite impressively, the entire 3160/2 QP movement measures just 6mm in height despite the complexity, and like most other VC movements, it is marked with the Geneva Seal. Other than its mechanical excellence, such certification also requires fine decoration, and seeing as this is VC we’re talking about, the 3160 has it in spades.

The movement’s striped plates have been given an NAC galvanic treatment for a sultry, greyscale look, contrasting against the brushed brass of the gear train components and silver sheen of the hand-finished bevels. One slight niggle I have to point out - though there’s ample opportunity for it, I can’t see any sharp angles, interior or exterior, which is a bit of a shame.

This translates to a 42mm x 12.3mm platinum case, which isn’t the most conservative, though the Traditionnelle has always been a contemporarily-sized collection, so this fits right in. The large crown is balanced by a rectangular pusher at 8 o’clock used to switch between the two modes, while two corrector pushers nestle on the caseband underneath it.

Unlike most of the Traditionnelle family, the Twin Beat takes on quite a sporty appearance. It has a slate grey finish to the solid gold dial half-plate adorned with hand guilloché, and contrasting red highlights throughout. Speaking of the dial, there are two minor changes over the preceding model - the VC name is now in white instead of black, and the power reserve sub-dial is a tad more legible, as the “DAYS” text moves to the left for better balance.

Matching the dial’s sportiness and the case material, the strap is a textured calfskin with red hand-stitching, finished in a platinum pin buckle.

What We Think

I won’t beat around the bush - I’m very happy to see the Twin Beat resurge. Granted, I am a little surprised Vacheron Constantin didn’t go for a more distinct aesthetic compared to the 2019 model, not because I’m not fond of the way it looks, but rather to offer an alternative approach. This is especially true considering they're charging considerably more than the prior model, though unsurprising seeing where the market is heading in general.

It’s such a clever way of expressing complication know-how (something that VC doesn't really need to prove anymore) but also in a way that feels actually useful. Don’t get me wrong, I love an unnecessarily complicated watch - give me multi-axis tourbillons and fluid-filled capillary hour indicators any day. But a perpetual calendar that you don’t have to worry about winding for more than two months, and it’ll keep perfect accuracy in the meantime? Genius.
